Atlantic Technological University
General Information
ATU is a multi-campus technological university in the west and northwest of Ireland that
delivers a rich combination of academic and research excellence, quality of life and
opportunity.
The university conducts applied research to inform the sustainable management of aquatic living resources through the Marine and Freshwater Research Centre. Based at ATU’s Galway Campus on the west coast of Ireland, the Centre conducts applied research that is policy relevant. Work at the centre includes developing innovative solutions to natural resource management challenges and supporting evidence-based decision making.
MFRC research usually falls within three main themes outlined below with some examples of the research topics undertaken:
- Enabling sustainability:
- Early life history and stock identification, biostatistical advice and analyses from local to national and international investigations.
- Conserving biodiversity:
- Marine mammal bio-acoustics; including the development and testing of technology for bioacoustics and monitoring ocean noise.
- Population assessment for small cetaceans, and the distribution and feeding ecology of baleen whales and basking sharks.
- Improving productivity:
- Development of technologies for the detection and measurement of the effects of novel pollutants.
- Characterisation of physiological responses in crustaceans.
- Elucidation of inflammatory bio-markers in seafood species.
- Development of immuno-stimulants for the improvement of fish health in aquaculture.
Many staff from the MFRC teach on IMBRSea courses and many IMBRSea students join the MFRC for professional practice and thesis opportunities.
IMBRSea courses within ATU take place in the third semester and all courses are assessed through continuous assessment in the form of a wide range of different assignments, rather than end of term exams.

The Local Coordinator and the International Office will assist with student registration, provision of access to ICT facilities and the Library facilities. There is an International Student Society that welcomes students and organises social events and trips for international students.
The ATU Students' Union has a range of services that are available to incoming international students such as support with student transport cards and bicycle parking on campus. In addition, the Students' Union acts as the central hub for all student sports clubs and societies.
ATU's Student Support Service provides all students with access to medical, counselling, career development and chaplaincy services. It also facilitates support to students with substantial financial hardship and students with disabilities.
